SUNDAY OBSERVER : Misplaced Applause

The selection of Salaam Bombay’ by NFDC and the applause it received at Cannes are totally misplaced. A film is a work of art. The subject of such a work can’t be the mere exposition of filth and suffering of humanity. The fact that the Third World is afflicted with several ills is not news. The rest of the world looks at us as if we are rare and exotic animals. It is no wonder that this film won great appreciation from a gathering largely dominated by people from the developed countries. Our film-makers, particularly those who aspire to win accolades abroad should grow up and begin to view India in a broader perspective. If a film like this is meant to be a window to Bombay or India, it is a shame on the citizens of the country.
